Ahmed Nouh Qatar, b. 1972

Ahmed Nouh is a Qatari artist known for his innovative use of materials and his exploration of cultural heritage. He studied drawing and painting at the Visual Arts Centre under Dr Mustafa Essa and is a member of the Souq Waqif Art Centre and the Qatar Fine Arts Society. Nouh was an artist in residence at the Fire Station in Doha, which led to a subsequent residency at Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. His first solo exhibition, Traces of Life, premiered in January 2019 during his time in Paris.
Throughout his career, Nouh has experimented with diverse materials, including burnt books – a medium through which he comments on the decline of reading in contemporary society and the historical significance of book burning in suppressing cultural and political opposition. His work seeks to transform destruction into reflection, emphasising the enduring value of literature.
His practice also includes large-scale installations, notably a textile-based tribute to pre-Islamic poetry, and his artistic engagement extends to collaborations with institutions such as Katara Art Centre, Doha Harbour Authority, Ashgal, Qatar Foundation and Hamad Hospital. His work has been acquired by private collections, and he has exhibited at al markhiya Gallery, participated in two biennales and received multiple art prizes. Nouh currently lives and works in Doha, Qatar.
