Salman Al Malek Qatar, b. 1958

Born in Doha 1958, Salman Al-Malek is a prominent Qatari visual artist and cartoonist. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in education and arts from Cairo in 1982. His work is characterized by poetic coloration, with human forms surrounded by colorful realms, reflecting his concerns and state of anxiety.
One of Al-Malek’s latest sculptural works is "Al Jassasiya" statue, created in 2022. The name and concept of this artwork were inspired by the Al Jassasiya rock carvings site located on northeastern coast of Qatar. This area was historically a seaport first settled by fishermen, pearl divers, and sailors. To date, around 900 rock carvings have been found in this region, along with traces of residential buildings and pottery fragments. The discovered rock carvings depict ships, fish, birds, and geometric shapes. His sculpture reflects one of these carvings, representing a boat and two mismatched oars merged together in an abstract form.

Salman Al-Malek has been exhibited in numerous significant local and international institutions including, the Istanbul Museum of Art (2015), the Cairo International Biennale in Egypt (2009), and the Bangladesh Biennale in Dhaka (2009). His artworks have been acquired by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, United States, the Museum of Modern Arab Art, and the National Museum of Qatar. Al-Malek has received several Arab and international awards, which include the Golden Palm Award at Periodic Exhibition of Gulf Cooperation Council States and Dana Award, Kuwait. He was also chosen as one of the most prominent Arab cartoonists.
