Ali Hassan Qatar, b. 1956

Ali Hassan (b. 1956, Doha) is one of Qatar’s most celebrated artists. He began his training as a calligrapher in 1972 while working for local newspapers, gradually developing his distinctive style. In 1984, he attended a workshop at the University of Leuven in Belgium, followed by graphic arts courses in Cairo in 1986. Throughout his career, he has explored various media, creating semi-abstract compositions that blend vibrant colours with calligraphic elements and sculptural forms.
For over five decades, Hassan has focused on the Arabic letter nun, producing an extensive body of work that includes traditional calligraphy, watercolour compositions, sculptures, and installations. His art explores the formal and spiritual qualities of letters and texts. Hassan’s work has been exhibited internationally in major cities such as Tokyo, Paris, Zurich, and New York. Notable solo exhibitions include al markhiya gallery (2020), Cultural Foundation, Abu Dhabi (2005), and Tokyo Art Club (2004), while group exhibitions include Art Dubai (2015) and Art Paris/Abu Dhabi (2007).
Although primarily self-taught, Hassan earned a BA in History from Qatar University in 1982. He received the State Encouragement Award in Fine Arts in 2005 and was honoured by the General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council in 2013. In 2021, he was appointed as an expert in fine arts by the Ministry of Justice.
Hassan’s works are housed in prestigious museum collections worldwide, and his influence continues to resonate across the global art scene.
