When the surface of a painting transforms into a vibrant dynamic realm, it harnesses the full energy, trust, and imagination of the artist. This shift reveals the ability to draw inspiration and seize opportunities from within the artwork itself, rather than relying on external influences.

Ali Hassan, 2024

Born in Doha in 1956, Ali Hassan is considered one of Qatar’s most celebrated artists. Beginning his artistic journey as a calligrapher in 1972 while working for numerous local newspapers, Hassan began honing his skills through training and workshops in Belgium and Egypt. Over the years, he has evolved into a master of semi-abstract compositions, blending vibrant colors, calligraphic elements, and diverse artistic techniques into his compositions.
Today, Ali Hassan’s art is closer to pure painting than ever before. His style has become increasingly intricate, reaching a state of purity and transcendent beauty.
For over five decades, Hassan has been captivated by the Arabic letter Nun, creating an extensive body of work that spans traditional black and white calligraphy, watercolor compositions, sculptures, and more recently, installation art. His work delves into formal and spiritual dimensions of letters and texts, reflecting his deep connection to Arabic calligraphy and its evolving artistic potential.
Hassan’s work has been showcased internationally, with solo exhibitions in Tokyo and group presentations in Zurich, Paris, and New York. His works are held in many prestigious museum collections worldwide. Though largely self-taught, Hassan earned a BA in history from Qatar University in 1982 and has received numerous accolades, including the State Encouragement Award in Fine Arts in 2005. He was also honored by the Gulf Cooperation Council in 2013, and appointed an expert in fine arts by Qatar’s Ministry of Justice in 2021. His work has been exhibited in Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Denmark, the United States, the Netherlands, Egypt, Morocco, Iraq, and across the Arab world.
